FONAR Exhibits Images of Beating
Heart At RSNA 2004; Company's Upright MRI Provides Images of
Beating Heart and Blood-Vascular System of Patients in Standing
or Sitting Position
MELVILLE,
NEW YORK, December 2, 2004 - FONAR Corporation (NASDAQ-FONR),
The MRI Specialist™, demonstrated the latest works-in-progress
application of its Upright™ MRI - obtaining images of
the beating heart and the blood-vascular system with the patient
in the vertical position - at the Technical Exhibit of the 90th
Scientific Assembly & Annual Meeting of the Radiological
Society of North America (RSNA), in Chicago.
Raymond V. Damadian, president and founder said, "When
physicians evaluate cardiac patients with heart
failure,
they would prefer to see the heart performing against its normal
physiological uphill load rather than in the lying down position,
where the blood is practically running downhill. Moreover, imaging
blood vessels vertically where flow is against gravity is more
likely to visualize the full impact of vascular pathologies
on blood flow that is not evident when blood is flowing horizontally.
In the gravity-affected vertical position, multiple factors
may lead to decreased arterial or venous circulation, such as
decreased cardiac output or loss of auto regulation."
"FONAR is delighted to introduce the first-ever MR angiography
and cines of the beating heart in the standing, sitting, obliquely
oriented or reverse Trendelenburg positions at RSNA. With over
60,000 radiologists, physicians and allied health care professionals
from around the world attending the conference, the 2004 RSNA
Technical Exhibit offers FONAR the perfect forum in which to
demonstrate our products to a highly targeted audience,"
concluded Dr. Damadian.
In addition, FONAR unveiled the prototype of its works-in-progress
MRI compatible treadmill for use inside its Upright™ MRI
Magnet. Interchangeable with the Company's standard Upright™
MRI positioning system, this novel device is designed to provide
doctors and clinicians with the ability to directly image the
exercising heart.
About FONAR
FONAR was incorporated in 1978, making it the first, oldest
and most experienced MRI manufacturer in the industry. FONAR
introduced the world's first commercial MRI in 1980, and went
public in 1981. Since its inception, we have installed nearly
300 MRI scanners worldwide. FONAR's stellar product line includes
the Upright™ MRI (also known as the Stand-Up™ MRI),
the only whole-body MRI that performs Position™ imaging
(pMRI™) and scans patients in numerous weight-bearing
positions, i.e. standing, sitting, in flexion and extension,
as well as the conventional lie-down position. With over 100,000
patients scanned, the patient-friendly Upright™ MRI has
a near zero claustrophobic rejection rate by patients. Approximately
85% of patients are scanned sitting while they watch a 42"
flat screen TV. Our latest MRI scanner is the FONAR 360™,
a room-size recumbent scanner that optimizes openness while
facilitating physician access to the patient. FONAR is headquartered
on Long Island, New York, and has approximately 500 employees.
