FONAR UPRIGHT™ MRI
Owner in U.K. Buys Second UPRIGHT™ Multi-Position™ MRI
MELVILLE,
NEW YORK, July 5, 2007 - FONAR Corporation (NASDAQ-FONR),
The Inventor of MR Scanning™,
reported today that London Upright MRI has purchased its second FONAR UPRIGHT™ Multi-Position™ MRI.
The unit is expected to be placed in the United Kingdom, where there are
already
two UPRIGHT™ Multi-Position™ MRI scanners.
This sale adds to
the eight Fonar UPRIGHT™ Multi-Position™ MRI
scanners currently installed in Europe.
London Upright MRI
Centre was founded by Dr. Edward Shelton. Dr. Shelton said, "We
have been operating the London Upright MRI Centre for nearly a year and find
it to be a very successful venture. We are currently the only UPRIGHT™ Multi-Position™ MRI
in London and have decided to take advantage of this opportunity by beginning
the process of placing a second into the United Kingdom."
Mr. St. John Brown,
Managing Director of the London Upright MRI Centre, said, "Our
Upright MRI has two unique advantages. The first one is the ability to image
patients in a weight-bearing position. For spine patients and their physicians,
being scanned in the UPRIGHT™ MRI is essential. Professor
Francis W. Smith from the Center for Spinal Research at the University of Aberdeen,
Scotland says that 'in just over 30% of the patients we find
things that are not evident in the recumbent position, and these are findings
that the surgeon must know about before commencing surgery.' Our
findings agree with Dr. Smith's. We find that a patient's
problem is often missed on a single-position recumbent MRI before coming to us."
"The
second significant advantage of the Upright MRI scanner," Mr.
St. John Brown continued, "is its extreme openness for claustrophobic
and anxious patients. One patient, Ms. Sally Jones, a past World Champion at
Womens' Real Tennis said, 'As I suffer from
mild claustrophobia, the very thought of sliding into the narrow, enclosed aperture
of an MRI scanner, brings on palpitations and panic.' After
completion of her Upright MRI scan, she enthusiastically explained 'for
once no sweat, no panic.' For more about the Sally Jones case,

Dr. Shelton continued,
"London Upright MRI Centre is blessed to have such a magnificent scanner.
Its
no surprise
to me that just last month, the FONAR UPRIGHT™ Multi-Position™ MRI
was chosen for the 'National Inventor of the Year Award.'

About FONAR
The 2007 National Inventor of the Year Award was presented to
president and founder Raymond Damadian, M.D., by the Intellectual
Property Owners Education Foundation ( www.ipoef.org )
for the INVENTION of the FONAR UPRIGHT™ Multi-Position™ MRI
(also known as the STAND-UP™ MRI). It's
the world's only whole-body MRI that scans
patients in numerous weight-bearing positions; i.e., standing,
sitting, flexion, extension, and lateral bending, as well as
the conventional lie-down position. An abundance of peer-reviewed
literature reporting the essentiality of Upright Imaging for
accurately diagnosing the human body can be found at: www.uprightmripublications.com and www.fonar.com/research_index.htm
With one half million patients scanned, the patient-friendly
FONAR UPRIGHT™ Multi-Position™ MRI
has a near zero claustrophobic rejection rate by patients. Approximately
85% of patients are scanned sitting while they watch a 42" flat
screen TV. Another MRI, the FONAR 360™, is
a room-size recumbent scanner that optimizes openness while facilitating
physician access to the patient.
FONAR, which built and installed the world's
first commercial MRI in 1980, is celebrating 30 years of technological
leadership in the MRI industry. The FONAR legacy began in 1970
when company founder Raymond V. Damadian, M.D., discovered marked
T1 and T2 signal differences between normal tissues and cancer
tissues and between various kinds of normal tissues. His discovery
of the MRI was patented in 1972 and subsequently protected by
the U.S. Supreme Court in 1997. Thirty years ago on July 3, 1977,
Dr. Damadian, along with the assistance of his two graduate students,
Larry Minkoff, Ph.D. and Michael Goldsmith, Ph.D. achieved the
world's first MRI image of a live human being
on the world's first MRI scanner they built
and named "Indomitable." Visit:
