PATENTS AND LICENSES
FONAR holds 63 MRI patents. Over the past five years, the company has enjoyed substantial patent infringement victories over several major competitors. To date, FONAR has collected $128.7 million from General Electric. There have also been confidential settlements with Hitachi, Philips, Siemens, Toshiba, Shimadzu, Elscint, and Health Images. One of the key patents that has been successfully protected is Apparatus and Method for Detecting Cancer in Tissue (U.S. Patent No. 3,789,832; awarded in 1974), the world's first MRI patent and the scientific basis for magnetic resonance imaging.
