Patents and Licenses
Fonar currently has 145 patents issued, and approximately 70 patents pending, which relate to the technology and components of the MRI scanner. We believe that these patents, and the know-how we have developed, are material to our business. The 145 issued patents extend to various times up to 2026.

One of our patents, issued in the name of Dr. Raymond Damadian and licensed to Fonar, was United States patent No. 3,789,832, Apparatus and Method for Detecting Cancer in Tissue, also referred to as the "Cancer Detection Patent". Filed on March 1972 and awarded in 1974, it is the world's first MRI patent and the scientific basis for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The Cancer Detection Patent was the first of its kind to utilize MR to scan the human body and to detect cancer. Subsequently the Company calls itself the Inventor of MR Scanning.

FONAR has been vigorous defending its patents. To date, FONAR has collected $128.7 million from General Electric for 1974 Cancer Detection Patent and a patent related to imaging. There have also been confidential settlements with Hitachi, Philips, Siemens, Toshiba, Shimadzu, Elscint, and Health Images.
